A Detroit native and a 2006 University of Michigan graduate, has spent the entirety of his 16-year career touching almost every facet of sports business. Currently serving as the Sr. Director of Global Social Media Strategy at Under Armour, where he leads a team developing and executing the global social marketing strategies and content for multiple social platforms including Under Armour brand handles, UA Basketball, UA Football, Curry Brand, Project Rock, Under Armour Women, UA Running and UnderArmourFC.
Prior to his time at Under Armour, Mekale led the content, creative and digital marketing team at Roc Nation's athlete marketing and representation vertical, Roc Nation Sports, working directly with athletes such as LaMelo Ball, Jaire Alexander, Saquon Barkley and Jalen Rose, on building their brand and growing their presence on digital and social properties.
Before joining Roc Nation, Mekale served as the Senior Manager of Social Media at Major League Soccer, while also playing a key role in the development of the newly established esports league, eMLS, which resulted in over 10 million organic impressions in its first season on social. Prior to making the jump to MLS, Mekale spent 12 years at St. John's University Athletic Department in various capacities, starting off as the Publications Coordinator in 2007 to leading and orchestrating the development and execution of the department's creative, digital, and social media strategy, while overseeing licensing, brand development, and positioning initiatives.
Prior to his time at Under Armour, Mekale led the content, creative and digital marketing team at Roc Nation Sports, working directly with athletes such as LaMelo Ball, Jaire Alexander, Saquon Barkley and Jalen Rose.
A self-taught graphic designer by trade, and moonlighting as a freelance creative consultant, Mekale has had the privilege of conceiving, developing, and designing creative content for many sport brands across the country including the NBA, Bleacher Report, Big Ten Network, Phoenix Suns, Cleveland Cavaliers, New York Knicks, University of Michigan, Northwestern University, and many others.
He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Akello Bomani Foundation, a Detroit based non-profit that is dedicated to empowering young Black men at the college level by providing essential resources—financial, temporal, and developmental—that foster academic, personal, and professional success.
